Curriculum
PERIOD 1
Full time attendance at the school from 09.00 hrs to 16.00 hrs (30 hours per week) is required during this time for a period of approximately 8-10 weeks, although the learner may have a number of trips on vessels to familiarise them with the sea environment.
The Apprentice will study 8 units around which the portfolio of evidence will be completed once work experience is underway:
Unit number:
101 Communicate using equipment and visual means (Short Range Radio Cert)
121 Take personal emergency action on board ship
141 Maintain personal health and safety on board ship
201 Contribute to the mooring, anchoring and security of the vessel
203 Contribute to maintaining a bridge watch
401 Operate fishing equipment
402 Handle and stow the catch
403 Construct and repair fishing gear
In each case the related portfolio element will be introduced and the relevant work required for completion will be undertaken either on board a fishing boat or by simulation.
Key Skills will be introduced at an early stage in period one and will be expected to be completed by the end of these classroom sessions in order that sea duty is not interrupted.
PERIOD 2
During this period of time (months 3 - 12), the Apprentice will spend the majority of their time on a working fishing vessel with the remaining time attending the school to undertake progression reviews, portfolio building and assessments
